The orientation principle

PFEIFER CLT relies on standardisation

The fibre orientation of the outermost ply is the bearing direction. Thanks to the use of dual plies, meaning top plies whose fibre orientation is the same (ss), the longitudinal or cross-stiffness or load bearing capacity of the panel can be increased on purpose. This purposeful change in the panel structure also increases its fire resistance. In case of special requirements towards appearance, changes in the structure can yield uniform visuals. PFEIFER CLT can theoretically be manufactured with up to 15 plies of cross-laminated wood lamellas.

CROSSWISE TOP PLY

Top plies in the crosswise direction to the panels (DQ) are mainly used for wall elements. Their bearing direction is vertical. DQ panels consist of three to five plies as standard. Production widths: up to 3.10 m.

LONGITUDINAL TOP PLY

CLT panels with top plies in longitudinal direction to the panel (DL) are primarily used for ceiling and roof elements. Their bearing direction is horizontal. They usually consist of three to seven plies.

PFEIFER CLT relies on visual appearance

Wood is a natural product that swells and contracts depending on its changing moisture content. Careful technical drying counter-acts this effect. PFEIFER CLT is dispatched with a moisture content of at least 12 % +/- 2 % to minimise the formation of cracks and visible gaps. Thanks to expert processing the material achieves an excellent product quality. Our wood panels are available in various visible appearance classes for different applications, while all panels are sanded to a certain visible quality. The individual lamellas are sorted on the basis of defined criteria.

INDUSTRIAL QUALITY (IQ)

Structural building elements intended for subsequent covering (e.g. with drywall or 3-layer panels

INDUSTRIAL VISIBLE QUALITY (ISQ)

Visible building elements in subordinate areas in commercial and industrial construction / elements viewed at a distance (e.g. projecting roofs), can be used in residential areas with restrictions

RESIDENTIAL VISIBLE QUALITY (WSQ)

Visible building elements, particularly residential areas. Includes kindergartens, schools and offices. Surface treatment (on site) recommended (e.g. using stains, UV protection, ...)

Demands towards surface quality

INDUSTRIAL QUALITY (IQ)

No visual demands towards surface quality, instead demands purely towards strength (C24) with occasional gaps, knots in the top ply, glue penetration as well as occasional pressure marks and contamination can occur, discolouration (e.g. blue stains) possible, glue penetration possible

INDUSTRIAL VISIBLE QUALITY (ISQ)

Medium demands, elevated visual criteria towards top lamellas, individual narrow gaps; slight discolouration possible

RESIDENTIAL VISIBLE QUALITY (WSQ)

Applies to all: Wood is a natural product, which is why: Like all solid wood products, the above stated qualities are subject to crack and gap formation as a result of drying to their future compensation moisture balance when installed due to the product characteristics. This cannot be prevented.

  • Specific criteria (knot sizes etc.) of surface versions: upon request
  • Surface qualities can be realised on one or both sides; visual criteria do not apply to narrow sides as well as processing edges
  • A panel structure switch may be required if residential visible quality is needed
