Pfeifer supplies Cross Laminated Timber CLT for residential construction in Enschede

The timber construction company De Groot is currently building a sustainable housing project in Enschede, the Netherlands, using around 28,000 m² of CLT panels from Pfeifer. Thanks to the high degree of prefabrication of the timber modules, the construction work is progressing quickly and the 185 apartments can be occupied as early as the beginning of 2024.

Together with the real estate developer Goossen Te Pas, the timber construction company De Groot Vroomshoop is realising a sustainable housing complex with 185 flats and 17 live/work studios in the centre of Enschede. The aim of the housing companies involved is to create space for young people in Enschede. The flats and live/work studios are therefore specifically designed for young professionals, while the ground floor will provide space for a wide variety of events.

Rapid construction progress

The hybrid construction method chosen allows for a rapid implementation of the project. In a first step, a traditionally built base was created from brickwork, sand-lime bricks, prefabricated floor elements and steel construction. Residential modules made of solid wood are placed on top. Since the flats are mostly built inside the factory, about 10 new flats are created per day. The turnkey solid wood flats are delivered by De Groot Vroomshoop with, among other things, a kitchen and sanitary facilities and assembled on site. Claus Greber, head of the timber construction division at Pfeifer, is pleased to be part of this groundbreaking project:

"Such a fast pace is only possible in timber construction. The new residents benefit from the timely execution, the quick occupation and the pleasant indoor climate.“

Sustainable with wood

The flats made of solid wood score with positive effects on health. The certified wood used also makes an important contribution to making the building activity climate-friendly, sustainable and resource-conserving - the key words being long-term binding of CO2 and cycle-friendly building. A green courtyard, a green façade, solar panels and a connection to the most sustainable heating network in the Netherlands make the project in Enschede a showcase residential building in terms of sustainability and energy efficiency.
