The best opportunities in Chanovice
Petra Moučková, Head of HR for the Czech Republic, talks about the exemplary development of the Chanovice site and why its 450 employees can look forward to a secure future.
What has changed in Chanovice since the Pfeifer Group took over the site in 2016?
Moučková: From the very beginning, Pfeifer invested substantial sums in modern infrastructure and in optimising existing production facilities, with every process geared towards the needs of the workforce. At first glance, a former employee might still recognise the plant, since the halls are in the same place. But the corporate culture, the way we work and the working conditions have all changed fundamentally for the better.
Which improvements do employees praise the most?
Moučková: The new technologies and safety measures make everyday work at the plant easier. Pfeifer also raised wages and introduced additional benefits, such as a meal allowance and a contribution to pension insurance. Through employee events and partnerships with local sports clubs, schools, kindergartens and cultural events, we help foster a sense of community and expand leisure opportunities in the region. Working conditions in Chanovice are now considered well above average.
Working at Pfeifer means, above all, security and stability.

So the timber industry has gained a better reputation in Chanovice?
Moučková: Pfeifer invests continuously in staff development. These efforts are paying off in the form of a positive corporate culture and an excellent reputation as an employer. Pfeifer is also seen as a reliable partner by suppliers and by the local community of Chanovice. Today, we’re constantly recommended by word of mouth, and we contribute to the region’s low unemployment rate of just 2 per cent.
A number of infrastructure projects are set to boost the site’s capabilities. What does this expansion mean for the HR department?
Moučková: We’re constantly looking for qualified staff in the areas around our sites, working with regional vocational schools and taking part in careers fairs. Despite the ongoing automation of production, people remain essential to the company’s success. Working with wood, such a unique raw material, calls for a certain feel for the material along with expertise and experience. Motivated employees who enjoy further training find not only secure, future-proof jobs with us, but also excellent development opportunities within an international company.
We’re looking for employees who embody our slogan, ‘Passion for timber.’
What opportunities are on offer in detail??
Moučková: Depending on the level, we offer various development programmes – for managers, for shift supervisors, and also tailored to individual needs. Technical training relevant to each role goes without saying. We also support our employees with German-language courses for positions that require German. With a very good command of the language, there’s generally also the option of working at other Pfeifer Group sites.
What sets Pfeifer apart from other employers in the region?
Moučková: Chanovice isn’t just the largest operation in the area – it’s also the most complex in terms of wood processing. The location is unique, too: businesses of this size are usually found in cities or industrial zones, whereas we’re based in a small village, and our workforce actually outnumbers the population of Chanovice. Pfeifer is a highly dynamic family business with great potential and strong investment capacity. That combination sets us apart, and it’s something our employees and applicants really value.
What personally appeals to you about your role?
Moučková: Wood is an incredibly versatile material that has fascinated me since childhood. As Head of HR, I love working with people – it lets me draw on my interest in psychology and be creative when looking for the best possible solutions.
